Understanding Shareholding in NMCS: Why You Should Consider Buying More Shares

By nmcs

Invest in Your Cooperative, Empower Your Future

At Ndoro Multipurpose Cooperative Society (NMCS), every member is not just a saver or a borrower — every member is an owner. One of the fundamental pillars of our cooperative is the concept of shareholding, which gives members both a stake and a voice in the growth of our society.

As a member, you are required to purchase an initial minimum share capital of ₦5,000. Which you did, when you paid the sign up fee of ₦11,000. But did you know that you can buy additional shares up to a maximum of 20% of the total share capital of the cooperative?

“You can also buy more shares other than the initial ₦5,000 share capital but not exceeding 20% of the total share capital of the cooperative (₦1 Million Share Capital).”

What Are Cooperative Shares?

In a cooperative society, shares represent your ownership and equity. When you buy shares in NMCS, you’re investing in the society itself. Your shares give you rights such as:

  • Voting in general meetings
  • Electing leaders and approving budgets
  • Receiving annual dividends (when declared)
  • Increased loan eligibility based on shareholding

Why Buy More Shares?

Increasing your shareholding in NMCS is more than a financial transaction — it’s a commitment to collective growth. Here’s why it matters:

  • Higher Dividends: The more shares you own, the larger your potential payout when profits are shared.
  • Greater Influence: Members with more shares often play a stronger role in shaping cooperative policies.
  • Stronger Cooperative: More share capital means better resources to serve members through loans, investments, and services.
  • Legacy Investment: Your shareholding can be part of your family legacy, depending on cooperative bylaws.

Know Your Limit

While members are encouraged to invest more, there is a cap to ensure fairness and balance. You may only own up to 20% of the total cooperative share capital. For NMCS, the total share capital is currently ₦1,000,000, which means:

Maximum individual shareholding = ₦200,000

How to Increase Your Shares

Interested in increasing your investment in NMCS? It’s simple:

  1. Contact any member of the Management Committee
  2. Submit a request to purchase additional shares.
  3. Make payment to Fidelity Bank – Account No: 5610084397
  4. Receive confirmation and updated share certificate.

Summary

Shareholding is the heartbeat of cooperative life. It binds us together not just as members, but as co-owners of a shared vision. Buying more shares is not just about growing your returns — it’s about deepening your stake in something bigger than yourself.

So why wait? Empower your future and strengthen your cooperative today.
